CAD/2D/3D drawing software. Ventilation design. Autodesk, Inc., the maker of these three different 3D design applications that are widely used by engineers and architects, has finally released a new tool to learn and teach the basics of building ventilation systems. This exciting innovation will allow students to become familiar with this complex topic before moving on to a specific course offered at a college or university, where they will study the ventilation process in more depth. As a result of this new product, Autodesk Ventilation Design Suite, Inc. has been selected as the 2013 recipient of the 2013 College Educator Award from ASHRAE for its innovative educational program. The new software is not just a learning aid, however. It also acts as an instructional resource through the incorporation of a content-driven navigation tool which streamlines the learning process and allows users to navigate through a variety of topic areas including topics pertaining to airflow and ventilation control, building physics and engineering principles. The software can be used with both Autodesk Navisworks Architectural 3D design software as well as Autodesk Inventor Professional 3D design software. It also works with Autodesk Revit MEP 3D design software. The user can apply what they learn to real-world situations in many different ways, including performing an energy analysis of the building, studying the thermal impact of various ventilation systems or simply exploring different options when planning out a ventilation system by adjusting the size and location of vents. The program provides in-depth explanations in order to make learning easier for students; however, it does not provide single projects that can be completed like other Autodesk products such as AutoCAD LT or AutoCAD Courses does. This means that users need to have a certain level of knowledge about building construction fundamentals before they get started with Ventilation Design Suite. With Ventilation Design Suite, users will be able to learn about designing ventilation systems, how they work and how to apply them in various different ways such as calculating building heating and cooling loads or examining the energy savings that can be gained from applying a ventilation system. The main issue with the Ventilation Design Suite is that it does not provide access to CAD/CAM software for users who would like to continue working on their projects without having to switch back and forth between two different pieces of software. The downside to this problem is that it may make it difficult for Autodesk to market the software as a complete learning tool since there are so few instances where students could conceivably use this type of product. There are a few issues with Ventilation Design Suite, which include a lack of a 3D printing feature and the fact that users will need to purchase additional software in order to complete their projects. The program also only features products from Autodesk's family of 3D design software, which may leave many students looking for an alternative due to the lack of options for another type of design application such as 2D drafting software.
